Baritone Sax, PopUp Music, Arranging, Engraving
Baptized in big band, Ben played for three years in some of Berklee’s elite ensembles: The Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Greg Hopkins; The Rainbow Big Band under the direction of Phil Wilson; and the Urban Outreach Big Band under the direction of Lin Biviano.
Ben’s ensemble experience inspired him to deepen his relationship with the saxophone and expand his horizons as an improviser. Under the tutelage of Dr. Shannon LeClaire Ben honed professional level instrumental skills and acquired agility on the baritone sax. While studying with Dino Govoni Ben was pushed to unearth and pursue his own inner voice as an improviser.
Since graduating, Ben has been regularly performing with an array of notable groups in and around Boston. He performs with The Greg Hopkins’ Big Band and Nonet, The Omar Thomas Large Ensemble, The Alex Lee-Clark stet, The BT/ALC Big Band, The Kenny Hadley Big Band, The Beantown Swing Orchestra, Eguie Castrillo and his Orchestra, and many more. As a side man, Ben has had the pleasure to play with Jamie Cullum, Gino Vannelli, and Randy Brecker. He has also traveled nationally and internationally with The Artie Shaw Big Band and The Franklin School of the Performing Arts.
In addition to his playing experience, Ben is the co-founder and president of Pop-Up Music. Pop-Up Music is aimed at using live music and discussion to engage workplace teams in the creative act of listening: the art of listening to yourself and others, of hearing the meaning behind the music, and of creating cohesion and understanding.
